Our approach to junior coaching

Built for the long term, around school and racing

A junior rider has school, exams and a race calendar to fit in. We plan the season around all three, look further ahead than the next race, and use the rider's power data to decide what to train next.

  • School and racing

The plan is built around the rider's current level, schedule and goals: the school week, exams and the race calendar are part of it.

  • Season by season

We plan towards the rider's long-term goals, not only the next race, and review progress from the data as the seasons go by.

  • Parents involved

For riders under 18, a parent or legal guardian signs up, gives consent for the rider's data and stays involved in communication where relevant.

The parent or guardian is also responsible for the rider's health declaration and medical clearance.

  • Power and data

A power meter is required. Your coach reviews the rides in WKO5 and adjusts the plan in TrainingPeaks.

Weekly on Performance, monthly on Core.

  • Strength and mobility

Strength, core and mobility blocks are part of every plan, alongside the work on the bike.

  • Testing

Optional INSCYD and lactate testing in person in Spain, at our testing locations or at a camp, used where it helps training decisions.

What our athletes say

Jānis and I have been working together for six years now. For more than 324 Mondays he has written out what needs to be done that week. The plan is always clear and doable. Jānis isn't a "let's go, come on!" kind of person :) but he always keeps the bigger picture in mind and puts overall health first, not chasing results at any cost.

Discipline, motivation and the drive to get stronger: that's where having the coach at your shoulder and hearing the right words really helps. And most importantly, even after ten years I'm still improving. Not only does it feel that way, the results and of course the numbers show it too.

Dana cares not only about measurable results but about my health and how I feel, and fits training into an amateur's everyday life. In Dana's hands I feel safe and understood.

Questions

Junior coaching: common questions

Who signs up: the parent or the rider?

For athletes under 18, a parent or legal guardian signs up, pays and gives consent for the junior's data, and stays involved in communication where relevant. The parent or guardian also stays responsible for the junior's health declaration and medical clearance.

Does a junior need a power meter?

Yes. A power meter is required for all plans: the coach plans the training and reviews the rides from its data.

How does the plan fit around school?

Every plan is built around the athlete's current level, schedule and goals, so school, exams and the race calendar are part of it. The coach adjusts the plan monthly on Core, weekly on Performance and as needed on Full-Service.

Do we have to come to Spain?

No. Coaching is delivered remotely through TrainingPeaks and direct contact with your coach, for athletes worldwide, in English, Latvian or Russian. Only lab-style testing, which is optional, is done in person in Spain, at our usual testing locations or at one of our camps.
